Patio FAQs

Common questions about patio plans.

Do I need council approval for a patio?
In most cases, yes, covered patios and pergolas require a building approval. Uncovered paved areas at ground level generally do not, but this depends on your council area and property specifics. We confirm approval requirements at enquiry stage so you're clear on what's needed before committing.
What's the difference between a patio and a pergola?
A patio is typically a ground level outdoor area, which may be covered (roofed) or uncovered. A pergola is an open lattice or beam structure without a fully solid roof. For approval purposes, the key distinction is whether the structure has a roof. Our fixed price service covers standard covered and uncovered ground level patios and pergolas on standard residential lots.
Is the fixed price the same for roofed and unroofed patios?
Yes. The $2,990 fixed price applies to both roofed (covered) and unroofed ground level patios on standard residential lots. We confirm suitability at enquiry stage, no commitment required.
What's the difference between a patio and an elevated deck?
A patio sits at ground level, typically a concrete slab or paved area, which may or may not have a roof. A deck is an elevated timber or composite platform, supported on posts or bearers and joists. Both require approval. Plan Draft offers separate fixed price services for each, see our Deck Plans service if your project is elevated.
What if my existing house plans aren't available?
Existing house plans are helpful but not always essential. We'll work with your title survey, site photographs, and property details. If we need anything specific, we'll let you know at the outset, before any commitment is required.
Do I need structural engineering for a patio?
Structural engineering is not included in the fixed price. For many standard patios, engineering is not required, but this depends on the roofing type, span, and your certifier's specific requirements. We'll give you an honest assessment at enquiry stage.
